A Family Day Out at Whale Bone Whitby| History, Fun, and Learning

Whitby, nestled in the picturesque county of North Yorkshire, is a charming seaside town that has something for everyone. One of its most iconic landmarks is the Whale Bone Arch, which stands proudly on the West Cliff, overlooking the sea and the quaint town below. As someone who recently visited Whitby with my family, I can tell you first-hand that it offers a rich blend of history, stunning views, and plenty of family-friendly activities.

The History of Whale Bone Whitby

The Whale Bone Arch is a striking monument made from actual whale jawbones, a tribute to Whitby's storied whaling heritage. The first arch was erected in 1853, when whaling was a significant industry for the town. This original set of bones was replaced in 1963 and again in 2003, with the current arch made from the jawbones of a bowhead whale, donated by Alaska’s Inuit people. The arch serves as a powerful reminder of Whitby's maritime past and its once-thriving whaling industry, offering a fascinating glimpse into a bygone era.

Exploring Whitby's Attractions

Whitby is brimming with attractions that cater to all ages. A must-visit is Whitby Abbey, perched high on the East Cliff. This hauntingly beautiful ruin inspired Bram Stoker's Dracula and offers spectacular views of the town and coastline. The Captain Cook Memorial Museum is another highlight, celebrating the life of the famous explorer who learned his trade in Whitby.  For families, the Whitby Museum in Pannett Park is a treasure trove of local history, featuring everything from fossils to Victorian jet jewellery. The park itself is perfect for a leisurely stroll or a picnic, with beautifully landscaped gardens and a fantastic play area for children.

Amenities and Family-Friendly Features

Whale Bone Whitby and the surrounding area are incredibly welcoming to families. There are plenty of clean and accessible public restrooms, baby-changing facilities, and benches where you can rest and take in the view. Parking is straightforward, with several car parks around the town, although it can get busy during peak seasons.  If you are looking for a place to eat, Whitby does not disappoint. The local eateries cater to a variety of tastes and budgets. On our visit, we enjoyed lunch at a cosy fish and chip shop, sampling the town's famous dish. Expect to spend around £40-£60 for a family of four at a mid-range restaurant. For a more upscale dining experience, such as a seafood dinner with a view, you might budget around £80-£100.

Learning Opportunities for Children

A trip to Whale Bone Whitby is not just fun but also highly educational for young minds. Children can learn about:

  • History and Heritage: Through the story of the whaling industry and its impact on Whitby, kids can gain insights into maritime history and the significance of whaling in the 18th and 19th centuries.

  • Marine Biology: The arch itself, along with exhibits at local museums, can spark an interest in marine life and conservation. Understanding the scale of a whale's jawbone can be a thrilling experience for kids.

  • Literature and Exploration: Whitby Abbey's connection to Dracula and the Captain Cook Memorial Museum offers engaging ways to introduce children to classic literature and the age of exploration.

  • Geology and Paleontology: Whitby’s coastline is a fantastic place for fossil hunting, providing a hands-on experience with geology. The Whitby Museum also has excellent fossil collections that can inspire budding palaeontologists.

When visiting Whale Bone Whitby, you will also find several car parks conveniently located nearby, this makes it perfect as you will never run out of car park space. Here are some options for car parks:
